Recently, we had the pleasure of planning, managing and coordinating an unforgettable 88th birthday party for Richard, transforming the stunning Great Hall at Kingswood Arts into a glamorous 1920s and 1930s-inspired celebration filled with jazz, swing music, elegant décor, exceptional food and cherished family memories.

From the initial planning stages through to the final dance of the evening, Triple Eight London managed the entire event from start to finish, bringing together a carefully selected team of trusted event suppliers to create a truly special occasion.

Discovering Kingswood Arts: A Hidden Venue in South London

Many people searching for unique event venues in South London may never have heard of Kingswood Arts. Situated within the Kingswood Estate, this remarkable building is one of South London's best-kept secrets.

Kingswood Arts is a not-for-profit arts centre and cultural hub housed within a magnificent 32-room mansion. The venue serves as an important community resource, offering creative programmes, performances and activities for local residents while preserving one of the area's most fascinating historic buildings.

The Great Hall, where Richard's celebration took place, offers an impressive setting for private parties, milestone birthdays, corporate events and special occasions. Rich Victorian architecture, grand wood panelling and period features create a unique atmosphere that feels far removed from modern event spaces.

An added bonus for guests was the venue's free parking, making it a convenient and accessible choice for family and friends travelling from across London and beyond.

The Fascinating History of Kingswood House

The story of Kingswood House adds another layer of character to any event held there.

The estate's origins can be traced back to the historic King's Wood, part of Dulwich Manor. However, the building's most famous chapter began in 1891 when John Lawson Johnston, the inventor of Bovril, acquired the lease and commissioned significant extensions to the property.

Architect Henry Vaughan Lanchester transformed the house by adding the magnificent Great Hall and Palm Court, earning the property the nickname "Bovril Castle." The lavish Victorian interiors, decorative woodwork and grand entertaining spaces reflected the ambition and success of its owner.

Over the decades, Kingswood House welcomed notable residents and guests, including Russian aristocrats, wealthy industrialists and even explorer Ernest Shackleton. During the First World War, the house served as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers before later becoming part of the local community landscape that exists today.

Today, Kingswood Arts continues to preserve this important piece of South London history while opening its doors to private celebrations, community events and cultural activities.

Planning a 1920s and 1930s Art Deco Birthday Party

Richard's family wanted to celebrate his remarkable milestone birthday with a theme that reflected elegance, sophistication and fun.

The historic setting of the Great Hall provided the perfect backdrop for the theme, with its grand Victorian features complementing the timeless elegance of the Roaring Twenties.

Creating a Grand Arrival Experience

Guest experience was a key focus throughout the event.

As guests arrived, they were welcomed along a red carpet supplied by Mark at Apex Canopy Hire in West Wickham before enjoying a drink and viewing a slideshow celebrating Richard's life, family and achievements. The red carpet created a sense of occasion from the moment guests entered, setting the tone for an elegant evening inspired by the glamour of the 1920s and 1930s.

A particularly touching moment came as Richard and his partner entered the hall. In honour of the family's Polish heritage, they were welcomed with one of their favourite Polish songs while friends and family stood to greet them, creating an emotional and memorable entrance.

Elegant Event Styling and Décor

The venue was transformed to capture the glamour of a vintage jazz club.

The Great Hall featured:

  • Art Deco-inspired design details

The beautiful luxury table linens were supplied by Hallmark Catering, providing an elegant foundation for the room design and helping to create a sophisticated dining experience for guests. Feather centrepieces added height and drama to each table, while gold and cream balloon installations enhanced the grandeur of the Great Hall and its sweeping staircase.

The event décor and styling were designed and delivered by Lizzie from Connie & Joan, while the stunning balloon installations were created by Balloon Lab London.

Together, the styling elements elevated the venue while complementing its historic architecture and character, transforming the Great Hall into a sophisticated setting worthy of a Roaring Twenties celebration.

Live Entertainment, Jazz and Swing Music

No 1920s-themed event would be complete without live music.

Guests enjoyed fantastic performances from singer Ellie Elston and the Sunshine Kings Jazz Band, whose authentic swing and traditional jazz performances perfectly captured the atmosphere of the era.

Throughout the evening, guests danced, sang along and enjoyed a soundtrack that spanned multiple generations.

One of the night's standout moments occurred when black balloons dramatically fell from a net suspended above the entertainment area following a special birthday performance dedicated to Richard.

Triple Eight London's founder, Henri, also provided DJ entertainment throughout the celebration, carefully curating music from different decades to ensure every generation of guest had a chance to take to the dance floor. Supporting the event behind the scenes was Nathan (DJ KTM) , who attended as part of the wider Triple Eight London supplier network. As with all professionally managed events, contingency plans were in place throughout the evening, ensuring entertainment and event operations would continue seamlessly while Henri coordinated suppliers and oversaw the smooth running of the celebration.

International Catering Reflecting Family Heritage

Food played an important role in the celebration, reflecting both family traditions and Richard's love of entertaining.

Prepared by Emi from Campechano Foods, guests sampled vibrant Argentine and Mexican dishes packed with flavour and authenticity.

Traditional Polish Food

Alina and Delight Wedlinka provided a selection of traditional Polish dishes, offering a meaningful connection to the family's heritage and ensuring many familiar favourites were available for guests to enjoy. A particular highlight of the evening was Alina's homemade Bigos, which proved incredibly popular and was enjoyed by guests throughout the celebration.

Wine Selection

A carefully selected range of wines supplied by Majestic Wines complemented the menu and helped keep glasses topped up throughout the evening. Picked up by our in house courier service and sister company Henry’s Van Services.

Family-Friendly Entertainment

To ensure guests of all ages were entertained, a dedicated children's area was created with games and activities.

This allowed younger guests to enjoy the celebration while adults relaxed, socialised and enjoyed the entertainment programme.

The Perfect Birthday Finale

As the evening reached its climax, guests gathered to celebrate with birthday cake, giant sparklers and a heartfelt rendition of Happy Birthday.

The atmosphere throughout the evening perfectly reflected what the family had hoped to achieve: a celebration filled with laughter, music, dancing, great food and unforgettable memories.
